Street art in Lisbon

With picture perfect views, historic monuments, vintage yellow trams and Instagram worthy neighbourhoods, few cities are more charming than the capital city of Portugal, Lisbon.  With an appeal that is both enduring and timeless, a walk along the eclectic streets of Lisbon is quite an experience.  And if you are someone who loves chasing art on your travels, Lisbon does not disappoint.  The artwork on the city’s streets are indeed a riot of colour.

From paintings on building facades and fascinating tile work on the walls to specially created murals and even decorated rocks on the beach shoreline, Lisbon is a hub of creativity and a haven for art lovers.  On a recent visit, I managed to find several of these artistic spots right in the middle of the city.

Azulejo Tiles: arguably the most famous symbol of Portugal, azulejos are intrinsic to Portuguese culture and have been in use since centuries.  The practice of using them as embellishments for the exteriors has been popular since the 19th century.

Blue is the signature colour of azulejos as it symbolized wealth and prosperity which the Portuguese achieved through their maritime exploits.  You can also spot these tiles in hues of yellow, brown and green.  So, as you take a stroll along the winding cobbled streets of the city, take a moment to look at the symmetric patterns around doors, external walls and balconies.

Admire intricate designs crafted using azulejos as they adorn parks, street corners and building facades.

Murals: the streetscapes of Lisbon are also known for their fascinating murals.  And the work of Bordalo II is unmissable.  Crafted using mixed media, this young Portuguese artist is a master of the concept of reuse and upcycling.  With a firm belief that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, his thematic murals are eye catching to say the least.

LX factory: An erstwhile industrial complex that housed textile factories, LX factory today is a chic and happening quarter filled with boutique shops, concept stores and unique cafes.

It is also a great place to spot lots of street art.  Below are some captures of the streetscapes and vibrant art scene at LX factory.

Painted rocks by the beach: As I walked down Praça do Comércio and headed towards the promenade, the sight of painted rocks along the shoreline was something that caught my eye.

Stacked one above the other while forming adorable shapes, these rocks painted in vibrant hues of green, red, yellow and black are not to be missed if you love art.

All in all, this European capital is a great place for street art captures and if you are looking for more, there are several street art walking tours you can sign up for.
