Perched at an altitude of over 6700 feet above sea level in the eastern state of West Bengal, Darjeeling is also known as the Queen of the Hills and is often touted as the gateway to the Himalayas. This is mainly because the hill station offers stunning views of third highest peak of the world, the mighty Kanchenjunga. Replete with carpets of verdant tea gardens, Darjeeling was a popular getaway with the British and was the summer capital of the Bengal Presidency. Even today it is a very popular holiday destination with tourists from all over the world. So, here is a list of five things to do when in this hillstation:

Early Morning Drive to Tiger Hill
Situated at 1650 feet above Darjeeling, Tiger Hill is a hotspot with locals and tourists alike who come in hordes to watch the sunrise. The excitement is indeed palpable as you witness this breathtaking spectacle as the crimson red head of the sun slowly appears over the horizon. It slowly grows in size painting the sky in fiery tones of orange, yellow and even purple. As it finally morphs into a fiery ball, you realize that dragging yourself out at an absolutely unearthly hour (as early as 2.30 am) was indeed worth it!

This one is a hidden gem tucked away from the urban humdrum of Darjeeling. It is home to the native Lepcha tribe and most of the region is blanketed with thick pine forests that offer a tranquil refuge from the city’s noise. As you approach the village, the fragrance of fresh pine and the chirping of birds is unmissable. The stunning beauty of the pine forests as the sunlight infiltrates the think canopy is awe inspiring and a sight to behold.

Himalayan Tibet Museum
This museum has an interesting display about Tibet, its topography, history, flora, fauna, socio-economic life and The Dalai Lama. Detailed photographs, models, objects and artefacts give visitors an insight into their religious customs, beliefs and rituals. It also has compelling displays on important political developments in Tibet including the Tibetan community in exile.

Ghum Railway Station

This is the highest railway station in India at 7407 feet. Apart from the heritage vibes and vintage coaches, do not miss the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) Museum located inside the premises. It has some invaluable information on world heritage and the DHR. The history, building and unique aspects of the DHR have been displayed along with information on the nitty-gritty of loops, gradients and Z reverses. There are objects like vintage lamps, furniture and other railway equipment on display apart from several yesteryear DHR railway coaches.

The Yiga Choeling Monastery dates to 1850 and is the first Buddhist Tibetan monastery to be built in Darjeeling. Belonging to the Gelukpa or the Yellow Hat sect, the highlight of the monastery is the soul stirring statue of Maitreya Buddha that is 15 feet in height.

Before you leave Darjeeling do not forget to visit the iconic Mall Road in the city apart from the Japanese Temple and Peace Pagoda situated atop the Jalapahar hills. The Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre in Lebong is a great place to buy souvenirs.
