A visit to Darjeeling often means a ride on the heritage Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a visit to the tea gardens and a trip to Mall road. But beyond the touristy spots, a visit to the Yiga Choeling Monastery located in Ghoom forms for an insightful visit. One of the oldest Tibetan monastries located about 8 km from the heart of Darjeeling, this monastery dates back to 1875. Here are some captures of this awe-inspiring monastery.
The main deity is called ‘Maitreya Buddha’; it is a majestic statue standing tall at 15 feet and exudes divine vibes. The monastery is also called the Sakya monastery and it is an ancient one under the Sakya order.
The interiors of the monastery is replete with bright paintings and is full of historical manuscripts including rare Buddhist manuscripts.
The entire ambience is serene and tranquil and the monastery perched at an elevation of 8000 feet offers views of the magnificent Kanchenjunga on clear days. One can witness a slice of the old world charm as you walk around this peaceful monastery. The monks are friendly and are willing to explain about the monastery too.
From prayer bells to candles, the entire atmosphere of the monastery is idyllic and peaceful. A great place indeed to visit while in the hill station.
Yiga Choeling Monastery is located very close to Sterling Darjeeling and is about 50 km from Kalimpong.
