Although Switzerland is a small country by size, it sure packs a punch when it comes to varied sights. From majestic mountains and lush green meadows to quaint towns and fairy tale villages, there is never a dearth of interesting places to visit in this tiny land-locked country.

Murten aka Morat located in the western part of the country and in the Fribourg region is one such place. Situated about 30 km from the capital city of Bern, this historic town is full of medieval vibes replete with fortifications, ramparts, alleys and castles.

The charming old town has a character that is distinctly antiquated and is full of vintage buildings, fountains and characteristic arcades. Most of the buildings are in Baroque and Gothic style and date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. As we visited the town during Easter, some of the fountains were beautifully decorated with spring blooms.

The 1755 castle is one of the highlights of the town whose tall towers can be seen from quite a distance. Stepping inside the imposing gates offer some of the best views of the surrounding landscape.

The Bern Gate is arguably the most important landmark in the well preserved old town. It dates back to the early 13th century and has been rebuilt several times. The gate houses a magnificent clock that was crafted in 1712 by Ducommun brothers in La Chaux-de-Fonds.

No visit to Murten is complete without taking a tour of its famous rampart walls that were built in multiple stages using various materials like stone, gravel etc. There is a well laid path and the access to the walls is via a wooden staircase. It is open from sunrise to sunset and while it is safe, it is important to exercise caution especially with children.

The massive stone walls have several openings and offer some wonderful views of the town and beyond.

As you alight towards the exit, you can have a look at the wonderfully restored former tower clock of Murten’s City Hall. The 1816 clock has now been designated as an ancient monument.

While in the town, you can enjoy some downtime by the placid waters of lake Murten.

Take time to stroll the alleys for little cafes and boutiques retailing some gourmet delicacies and specially curated furniture, artefacts and curios.

Murten is about two hours by road from Zurich and forms for a perfect day trip from Zurich.
