Recipe: Gur (Jaggery) ka Sharbat a Refreshing Summer Drink

Come summer and the sweltering heat calls for some refreshing drinks. Gur Ka Sharbat is a popular jaggery-based drink that is perfect for the upcoming summer months. Gur is the Hindi word for jaggery, and sharbat refers to a sweet, flavored drink. This traditional beverage is not only rejuvenating but also provides an energy boost due to the natural sweetness of jaggery. Further, jaggery being a storehouse of minerals has numerous health benefits and helps boost immunity. It is rich in antioxidants and minerals like iron, zinc and selenium and is known to have positive effects on digstive and respiratory problems. It is also helps treat anemia and is known to be a good blood cleanser. This sharbat is a great way to beat the heat and stay refreshed, especially during the hot summer months.

Ingredients:
* 1 cup jaggery (grated or broken into small pieces)
* 4 cups water
* 1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder
* 1 tablespoon lemon juice
* Ice cubes (optional)
* Fresh mint leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Dissolve Jaggery: In a saucepan add jaggery pieces to water. Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring continuously, until the jaggery dissolves completely. This will create a jaggery syrup.
  2. Add Cardamom: Once the jaggery is dissolved, add cardamom powder to the syrup. Stir well to combine.
  3. Cool the Syrup: Allow the jaggery syrup to cool to room temperature. You can speed up the process by placing the saucepan in the refrigerator.
  4. Add Lemon Juice: Once the syrup is cool, add fresh lemon juice. Adjust the quantity of lemon juice based on your taste preference.
  5. Strain (Optional): If there are any impurities in the jaggery or if you prefer a clear drink, you can strain the syrup using a fine sieve.
  6. Chill and Serve: Refrigerate the Gur ka Sharbat for a couple of hours to chill it. You can also add ice cubes if desired.
  7. Garnish (Optional): Garnish with fresh mint leaves just before serving for added freshness.
  8. Serve: Pour the chilled Gur ka Sharbat into glasses and serve as a delightful and natural sweet drink.
