There is no denying the fact that Switzerland is a land of unparalleled natural beauty. Apart from its glorious mountains and picturesque lakes, did you know that it is home to the world’s only glacier waterfalls? Well, this is Trümmelbach falls for you.

Located close to the fairy tale town of Lauterbrunnen in the Jungfrau Region, these falls are also very close to Interlaken which is a popular tourist destination. The path and ascent to the falls as well as the views from the top are absolutely stunning and quintessentially Switzerland!.

Also referred to as the valley of 72 waterfalls, the Trümmelbach Falls are Europe’s largest subterranean water falls and is accessible by a series of lifts, tunnels, platforms and steps.

Housed in a rather mystical cavern, the falls are accessible by a lift as well as by stairs. We decided to take the lift to the top and then made our way down by descending via steps. The gushing sound of the waters is almost deafening and the sight of the milky waters churning and lashing agaisnt the rocks is indeed a sight to behold.

It is key to note that the Trümmelbach Falls drains the glacial melt from the Eiger, Jungfrau and Monch at a speed of a whopping 20,000 liters/second. To say that it is a stunning sight is an understatement! The waters also carry boulders and scree adding to the whole power of the falls. The vertical cracks amidst the rocks that are punctuated by the gushing streams stand testimony to nature’s beauty.

There are several stops where you can pause and admire the mesmerizing sight and also click pictures. The places which are dark are well illuminated too. While the railings are high and generally safe, it is always recommended to be extra cautious if you are travelling with small children. Be mindful for slippery floors if the water pressure is high and avoid bending over the railings. Infants and children under 4 as well as dogs are not allowed at these falls for safety reasons.

Depending on the weather conditions, the Trümmelbach Falls are open daily from the beginning of April to the beginning of November from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and in July and August from 8.30 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is always recommended to double check before going in case you plan to visit at the end of the season.
