Photoessay: Geneva – Diverse Sights and a Kaleidoscope of Experiences

Surrounded by mountains and located on the south western end of Lake Geneva, the city of Geneva is one that offers a multitude of experiences.  I happened to visit this city on a short day trip from Zurich and it was indeed a memorable experience.  Since the trip was hurried, I would love to visit again but here are some captures of my last visit.  Medieval streetscapes, a beautiful lake, insightful museums, an alluring old town, there is plenty to see and do in Geneva and forms for a perfect weekend trip from Zurich.

Known to be a centre of finance, diplomacy and cooperation, Geneva is synonymous with the United Nations office and the International Red Cross.  You can visit the former by booking a guided tour which is fascinating to say the least.

A short walk from the UN office, I was quite thrilled to find the statue of Mahatma Gandh in Ariana park.

Just outside the UN office, is the iconic “Broken Chair” which is the handiwork of sculptor Daniel Berset that is a whopping 12 meters tall and is an ode to the victims of the landmines.

The old town is an eclectic maze of winding cobbled streets housing charming cafes, boutiques and shops.   The  Cathedral St-Pierre is a significant monument and a must visit.

Geneva is home to several engaging museums like the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum, Museum of Natural History (Museum d’Histoire naturelle) and Patek Philippe Museum. The Maison Travel is a unique museum housed within Geneva’s oldest private residence and depicts the history and evolution of the city and its inhabitants. It is situated within the old quarter.

The soul of the city is arguably Lake Geneva which is the largest water body in the country and offers a number of exciting activities including cruises, boat rides and public baths in the warmer months.
