Mullayanagiri Hill, Chikmagalur – bewitching beauty amidst the peaks

Lush green landscapes, mist covered mountains, stunning views and panoramic beauty all around……this is Mullayanagiri hill for you.  Arguably one of the most popular places to visit when you make a trip to Chikmagalur, Mullayanagiri is the highest peak in the state of Karnataka.  Nestled at a height of a whopping 1950 meters, Mullayanagiri is located about 25 km from Chikmagalur town and is accessible by a short drive.

The peak get its name from that of sage Tapasvi Mullappa swamy who is believed to have meditated in the caves near the peak.  There is also a small temple dedicated to the sage at the summit.  While the drive takes you up to most part of the hill, the peak is accessible by a flight of stairs and is a short climb.  With view of the Western Ghats all around, the scenery all around is breathtaking to say the least.

Just below Mullayanagiri is Seethalayanagiri which is about 3 km below.  At Seethalayanagiri, there is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva; there is a shrine of Lord VeeraNarayana as well in the temple.  With solitude all around, this temple is replete with serenity and exudes zen vibes.

The drive from Chikmagalur to Mullayanagiri is equally scenic and offers a plethora of sights.  From avian species to a wide variety of native plants, trees and eye catching, colourful flowers, every frame is a treat for the eyes.

Hence, the place is a favourite with bird watchers, nature lovers and naturalisits alike.

Mullayanagiri is also a popular haunt with trekkers, mountain bikers and adventure junkies.  With several options to stay in and around Chikmagalur, it is a key tourist hotspot and yet another quick trip from Chikmagalur.
