A tranquil setting amidst lush greenery and a plethora of chirping birds,  Kanva forms for a perfect getaway from Bangalore.  At a distance of just about 65 km from Bangalore, Kanva reservoir is an artificial lake which is man made and formed by the waters of river Kanva.  Named after sage Kanva who finds mention in the Ramayana, this river is a tributary of the river Cauvery.

The project was executed primarily for the purpose of irrigation though the serene environs attract a large number of tourists.

Spread over 700 hectares, the lake is a picture of calm and serenity and is located in Ramnagar district.

Apart from being a place where you can just soak in some fresh air and positive vibes, the environment here is a haven for avian species and therefore a treat for bird lovers.  There are plenty of birds you can spot on your way to the lake as well as near it.  Here are some captures:

Peacocks and peahens are a common sighting and these birds are a delight to watch.

This time I could spot some migratory birds too, albeit it was at a distance.

There are plenty of bird species including king fisher, sunbirds, shrikes and much more.

While Kanva is a wonderful place and relatively less crowded, it is imperative that you do your bit when you visit.  Simple rules of respecting the surroundings, strictly no littering,  not playing loud music or making loud noises and refraining from leaving any plastic behind will go a long way in preserving this precious ecosystem.

Kanva reservoir is located just about 15 km from the famous Aprameya Swamy temple and about 13 km from the famous toy town of Channapatna.
