Pochampally through images: the magical appeal of simplicity

Located at a distance of just 45 km from the City of Nizams aka Hyderabad is the pleasantly unpretentious village of Pochampally.  The dusty, deserted roads dotted with old fashioned houses present a picture of simplicity that is refreshingly uncomplicated, elementary and devoid of unnecessary fuss.  I fell in love with the plain and ‘clutter-free’ look of the village.

Most of the houses had colorful doors with traditional latches and locks that are reminiscent of the ‘good old days’.

Almost all households in Pochampally are into weaving as the village is synonomous with the production of the traditional ikkat fabric.  The modest houses have looms and machinery and the incredibly talented craftsmen are more than willing for you to come and take a look inside.

The day I visited happened to be “Mahalaya Amavasya” which marks the beginning of the popular ten day long Bathukamma festival in Telengana.   Most of them were hence busy cleaning and washing their homes and machines for the occasion.

The warmth, almost “honest-to-goodness” feel of the homes amidst the quiet, rustic setting had me truly floored.

    hehe.
Loved the simplicity of the village and the old world charm of the place.

  4. Informative post. Even though I’m in the City of Nizams, didn’t know about this village. Nice to see that the tradition of weaving is still alive here. Wonderful photos Rashmiji 🙂
