Transport Museum: Bury

We happened to visit the town of Bury enroute to Ramsbottom where we visited the Chocolate festival.  Part of greater Manchester, this town is just about thirty minutes from Manchester central and was once famous as a textile manufacturing hub.

The most prominent monument in the center of the town is the Peel Memorial which is the statue of the town’s most famous son, Sir Robert Peel. Twice UK Prime Minister and founder of the British Conservative Party, Sir Robert Peel was born in Bury. The 3.5 m high bronze statue is something you will not miss while in the center of Bury.

While looking up things to do in Bury, I was most fascinated by the legacy of the The East Lancashire Railway in the town. This is a heritage railway that runs from the town of Bury to Heywood, Ramsbottom and Rawtenstall and is based at Bury Bolton Street railway station.  In fact, the entire  background, history, tradition and culture of this heritage railway has been packaged into a unique “experience” and serves as a perfect family outing.  With scores of activities and fun events, the programs are truly enjoyable by both kids and adults alike.   As part of the  East Lancashire Railway experience, we visited the wonderful Transport museum in Bury.

Given my fascination for unique museums and heritage railways, this one was a real treat.  Housed in a tastefully refurbished goods warehouse of the 1800s, a visit to this engaging place transports you instantaneously to the days of the 20th century.  With vintage vehicles wonderfully restored and impeccably maintained, the place is a treasure house of trivia, exhibits and artifacts.

If you are a lover of history, do not miss the evolution chart of the British Railways and all the information related to the steam engines.

The vintage sign boards, luggage cabins and trunks of the yester years were some of the things I just loved.  The displays are interactive and user friendly which make the outing both educative and fun-filled.

  3. We’ve been on the railway a couple of times – once for a Santa special when our son was young and that was really great. Never been to this museum though – great post and somewhere I now intend to visit!

  5. This is another wonderful post Rashmi; you always have a beautiful way of reminding us how much history England has and how much we still haven’t discovered for ourselves! 🙂
